Wilfrid Edgecombe Award
The illustrious of our members was Wilfrid Edgecombe. He was born in 1871 in Huyton in Liverpool. He studied medicine at Liverpool University and UCLH and qualified in 1893. His House jobs were at the Royal Liverpool Infirmary and he subsequently demonstrated Anatomy and became a surgical tutor.
In 1894 he came to Harrogate. He became a member of the Harrogate Medical Society in 1895. He had served twice as President of HMS in 1908 and 1939-1945. In the World War I he served as a Captain in the R.A.M.C. and from 1919 -1932 served on the Town Council.
In 1905 he was appointed to the staff of Harrogate Infirmary and was very influential in the development of general hospital services and eventually the building of Harrogate District General Hospital in 1932. He retired from the hospital in 1936 but maintained a keen interest and influence in the hospital and local community. He died in Harrogate at his home aged 92 in 1963. Shortly after his death, a memorial trust was created with member’s donations and an endowment from his widow. The annual Edgecombe Lecture was founded.
The Society now as part of the Wilfrid Edgecombe Award awards annual Prizes for Junior doctors.
Applications are invited to all Foundation Year Doctors and Core Trainees working in Harrogate District (Open to FY1 & FY2, CT1, CT2 ST1 and ST2)
Prize: Judges from the HMS Committee and members will review all submitted abstracts and the authors of the top 5 will be invited to give a presentation to members at an agreed location.
A panel of members of the society will judge the presentations. The 1st prize award will be £500, and all the remaining finalists will receive £100.
The finalists that present their papers will receive a certificate for their portfolio.
Topic can be a quality improvement project (such as clinical audit), a case report or series, an original research project or a survey. The work must have been conducted whilst in post in Harrogate District.
Presentations:Presentations should be delivered using Microsoft PowerPoint and should last a maximum of 10 minutes. Marks will be deducted for going over time. After delivering the presentation, there will be 5 minutes to answer questions from our members.
Shortlisting Criteria:
Applicants will not be accepted if the application template is not completed. Applications in other formats will not be accepted.
The word count is a maximum of 200 words which includes references if provided.
Sunbmissions will not be accepted beyong the deadline date.
Candidates will be shortlisted based on demonstration of the originality, clarity and clinical significance of their work together with the robustness of their methodology.
Judging Criteria: Candidates will be judged on their style of delivery and the content of their presentation.
Open to: FY1 & FY2, CT1, CT2 ST1 and ST2 doctors working in Harrogate in Primary and Secondary Care. Only one application per candidate will be accepted.
Margaret E Manning Bursary Award
Dr Margaret E Manning was very involved with the work of HMS over many years. She joined the Society in 1970. She practised as a GP in Harrogate for more than 30 years and was elected as President of the Harrogate Medical Society in 1995/96. Margaret grew up in North Yorkshire, trained at Manchester University Medical School and returned to her Yorkshire roots after qualifying in 1965. Margaret was the society’s secretary for more than 25 years and despite ill health, Margaret continued to be the heart and soul of HMS right up until her sad death in June 2020. To commemorate Margaret’s, work the Society has created an elective bursary to medical students in her memory, The Margaret E Manning Travel Bursary.
The Bursary is open to all medical students from Leeds University undertaking an elective.
The submission Deadline: 1st May each year and presentation in October of the two successful applicants.
Applications for the awards will be reviewed by members of the HMS Committee and members and shortlisted The top scoring candidates will recieve £400 towards their travel bursary.
The awarded students will be required to deliver a presentation on their elective experience.
Applications should be no longer than one side of A4 and should outline their reasons for choosing to visit a particular destination or institution. They should indicate what you anticipate the quality of the experience will be and the benefits both to yourself and to the community. Successful applicants will be notified in June and will be expected to present an illustrated report of their elective period to Harrogate Medical Society in October.
